Widowspeak doesn't just create music, they create moods. Whether it's about everyday things, heartbreak or life seen from a wide angle, they are always concerned with the influence of place and time on personal experience – how vivid memories can feel like movies or dreams. On stage, the dynamic shifts seamlessly between soaring ballads and walls of ringing echoes, all with a humble and relaxed, Velvet Underground-esque approach. To see Widowspeak live is to discover the band at its best - with a masterful and cathartic balance between sweetness and melancholy.
The creative partnership between singer-songwriter Molly Hamilton and guitarist Robert Earl Thomas results in songs with catchy choruses and big guitar chords, backed by warm and expansive arrangements. With six beloved albums and years of touring, Widowspeak has steadily honed their craft. Each addition to their catalog has marked a subtle reimagining of the band's sound, even if certain reference points remain the same – like 90s dream pop and 60s psych rock.
The band formed in 2010 in New York City, born out of a fertile music scene then centered around DIY venues and warehouse rehearsal spaces in northern Brooklyn. Shortly after their first shows, the band was signed by local indie label Captured Tracks and slotted in among like-minded acts like DIIV, Wild Nothing, Beach Fossils, Blouse and Mac DeMarco.
