The Malmö Academy of Fine Arts was the first of its kind in Sweden to offer education in the fine arts. Previously, higher artistic education in what was called the visual arts had been tied to traditional art forms such as painting, graphics or sculpture. The fine arts emphasized individual studio time where the open work process took center stage.
The student period for an artist can, and perhaps should, be a time of experimentation, disruption and unexpected contexts. The Sketches Museum also celebrates the unpredictability of the artistic process. Therefore, it feels natural that master's students from the Malmö Academy of Fine Arts are exhibiting here.
The collections in the museum's exhibition halls are tightly arranged, inspired by what an artist's studio might look like. This is in contrast to what an airy gallery exhibition usually looks like. The Museum of Sketches is a place where the eye seamlessly wanders through the halls, from artwork to artwork. Here, the student exhibition has been allowed to grow into the permanent collection almost unnoticed. It tinkers with the internal order, masks itself, ends up in the crosshairs and allows the jumble of artworks to work freely.
