How is a story depicted in embroidery?

Students in grades 8 and 9 at Östratornskolan in Lund have participated in an art project inspired by both the medieval Bayeux Tapestry and the contemporary artist Britta Marakatt-Labba during the previous school year. The project has resulted in a shared textile artwork where each student has embroidered their own life event or memory.

Just as the Bayeux Tapestry gives us insight into everyday life in the 1000s and Marakatt-Labba's embroideries tell the story of the reality of the Sami people, the students' embroideries create a time document of the lives of young people today. The work becomes a mosaic of young people's experiences and a collective imprint from a generation. The aim is to give the students an opportunity to make an artistic mark on their time.

The exhibition is a collaboration between Östratorn School, Lund Art Gallery and Stadshallen. The work is displayed in Kulturrum at Stadshallen together with all the students' written stories. The installation is also accompanied by an audio recording where we can listen to a selection of stories.
