If you have listened to instrumental music such as symphonies and sonatas, it has probably happened to you that you have perceived the music as a drama or a sequence of images. But where do these scenes come from? Do you pull them out of the music or put them in yourself? And if it's you and other listeners who load the music with content, can it be said that one of you is more right than the other? Welcome to a discussion evening about music listening and interpretation!
The evening's guest is Tobias Pontara, professor of musicology at the University of Gothenburg. As a basis for the discussion, Odeum's pianist Markus Kvint plays excerpts from Johannes Brahms's Third Symphony.
