Majlis Agbeck awarded Ester Almqvist scholarship

The Ester Almqvist Memorial Foundation awards the 2025 scholarship to the artist Majlis Agbeck. The scholarship amount is SEK 140,000. In connection with the scholarship award, a couple of works by the artist will be displayed in the art gallery's project room.
Majlis Agbeck (b. 1948) works primarily with embroidery as an artistic method. Drawing and painting have, however, been a continuous element of her practice and still form part of her artistic expression. Her visual world moves in a borderland between the diffuse memories of childhood and the more precise observations of the present.
Agbeck embroiders her works on delicate organza fabric and uses thin threads to depict motifs such as animals, human organs and other stay organisms. A central point of departure in her artistry is what she herself calls “internal movements”, a concept that encompasses both physical and mental processes. These internal movements are materialized in the embroidery and contribute to the works’ low-key but intense expression.
