City Hall Litt: Cecilia Uddén

City Hall Litt presents

“There are no innocents in Gaza!” said an Israeli friend on October 8, 2023, the day after the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. Some time later, the Israeli president said the same thing. These words became the excuse for a shockingly brutal and dehumanizing war.
I understood early on that October 7th would change the Middle East more than the September 11th attacks on the United States. That Hamas's attack would lead to the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in Syria and the weakening of Hezbollah, Iran and the feared axis of resistance was hardly something Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar could have foreseen. But he probably had expected that Israel's retaliation would echo through generations and lead to a rarely seen hatred of Israel. My book is about the people in this new Middle East we now see, where everything tastes like ash.”
