The city breathes – art installation in Lund

Three thousand beach balls launch new cultural initiative in Lund

A warm welcome to the opening on Thursday, August 21st, from 17–18 pm in the City Hall.

White air-filled balls fill central Lund when the artwork “The City Breathes” by Jeanette Wester is inaugurated on August 21 in the City Hall. The installation marks the start of a long-term initiative to give Lund residents more art experiences and create opportunities for artists to exhibit in the city's spaces.

Lund is investing in a new mediation service that matches artists and cultural actors with empty premises, shop windows, parks and other places in the urban environment. The goal is more art experiences and new opportunities for both professionals and amateurs to show their art.

Participants at the opening: Sebastian Jaktling (S), chairman of the culture and leisure committee in Lund Municipality, Jeanette Wester, artist and Linn Hübinette, project manager for the mediation service.

"The City Breathes" can be seen at the following locations starting August 21st:
Stortorget, site of the Chillida sculpture.
City Hall, roof at the main entrance, address Stortorget 9.
City Hall, the glass walkways above Vårfruallén. Address: Vårfrugatan 1.
Bantorget, in the fountain. Address: Bantorget.

About the artwork “The City Breathes”
“The City Breathes” is a temporary installation that moves between the visible and the almost imperceptible. White, airy forms have been placed in public spaces – in fountains, on roofs, inside sculptures, against metal frames. They are pressed, float, rest.
They have no clear function, but change the place they occupy. Like breath in a built body – a rhythmically present, but often overlooked flow.
The title refers both to the city as a stay organism, and to the physical materiality of the installation: air, form, movement. At the same time, it is a call to the viewer to stop – to feel what is between the steps, between the laughter, between the lines.
In the meeting between the playful and the low-key, a space is created. Where the city can breathe.
