S. Carey is the alias of multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Sean Carey from Eau Claire, Wisconsin – perhaps best known as the drummer, backing vocalist and second longest-serving member of Bon Iver. Over the past decade, he has built a successful solo career with music inspired by the changes in nature and sustainability, a songwriting ability rooted in jazz and lyrics filled with emotion. It is languid but stripped-down folk pop where you are swept along in a universe that we recognize from Bon Iver. The voice, the parts and the harmonies are at the center where acoustic building blocks lie as a solid and steady foundation. Large rooms are mixed with dry, well-balanced elements placed at the forefront of the compositions.
His latest album, “Break Me Open”, is his fourth in a row and complements an impressive discography of three previous albums, two EPs and a long list of collaborations.
As an accomplished songwriter and producer, S. Carey has created music for both film and television. He wrote the song “Rose Petals” for Will Arnett for the Netflix series Flaked, collaborated with Dierks Bentley on “Hold The Light” for the blockbuster film Only The Brave, and contributed to Sufjan Stevens’ acclaimed album Carrie & Lowell. He has also written and produced for artists such as Low, Mike Kinsella, Pieta Brown, and Ed Tullett of Novo Amor.
