Welcome to a talk with Lars-Åke Gustavsson - in collaboration with Lund's horticultural society.
In many older Swedish gardens, you can still find some of the thousands of rose varieties that were introduced in Sweden during the 1800th and 1900th centuries, in some cases much earlier. These are roses that have been cultivated, loved and passed down for generations. Today, these long-lived, fragrant and hardy roses are part of our country's green cultural heritage.
During 2004–2010 carried out The Cultivated Diversity Program, Pom, a nationwide inventory under the name The rose call. More than 100 rose inventors sought out and documented roses and rose stories all over the country. Particularly interesting roses were collected and after many years of testing and evaluation, 331 were selected to be preserved in the National Gene Bank at the Swedish Agricultural University in Alnarp. The roses are a plant genetic and cultural historical resource for gardens in our time and in the future.
In the book The rose heritage in the National gene bank 274 of the gene bank's rose varieties are presented in detail with variety and group descriptions, an extensive image material and with fascinating stories about the people who cultivated them. 169 of the roses are described here for the very first time. The book is unique with its broad interdisciplinary content. It combines, as no other rose book has done before, new knowledge from the subjects of botany, horticulture, genetics and Swedish cultural history.
During the lecture in Lund, some of the roses found in Scanian gardens are presented.
LARS-ÅKE GUSTAVSSON, Loftahammar is a well-known rose expert and rose book author of, among other things, the standard work Roses for Nordic gardens. He co-founded the Swedish Rose Society and was its first chairman and has for two terms been vice president of the World Federation of Rose Societies.
Lars-Åke was active within Pom as project manager for Rosuppropet. In the project, he was responsible for the scientific parts of the project with questions about the classification, kinship and naming of roses.
