The Malmö Academy of Fine Arts was the first of its kind in Sweden to offer education in the fine arts. Previously, higher artistic education in what was called the visual arts had been tied to traditional art forms such as painting, graphics or sculpture. The fine arts emphasized individual studio time where the open work process took center stage.

The student period for an artist can, and perhaps should, be a time of experimentation, disruption and unexpected contexts. The Sketches Museum also celebrates the unpredictability of the artistic process. Therefore, it feels natural that master's students from the Malmö Academy of Fine Arts are exhibiting here.

The collections in the museum's exhibition halls are densely arranged, inspired by what an artist's studio might look like. This is in contrast to what an airy gallery exhibition usually looks like. The Museum of Sketches is a place where the eye seamlessly wanders through the halls, from artwork to artwork.

Here, the student exhibition has grown into the permanent collection almost unnoticed. It tinkers with the internal order, masks itself, gets in the way and allows the jumble of artworks to operate freely.

The exhibition will be on display at Skissernas Museum from August 30 to September 28, 2025.
