Take, take, take, taaaaaa! Four notes sounding in unison begin Ludwig van Beethoven's perhaps most famous work, the aggressive, anxious but also triumphant Symphony No. 5 where fate, according to many, can be heard knocking on the door. A fast-paced journey from the first movement's stressed C minor music to the fourth and last movement's climax in the purest C major (see also the theme for series Unheard of on November 21). As a contrast at tonight's symphony concert with the Academic Chapel: Richard Wagner's ethereal introduction to the opera Lohengrin where the opening high strings embody the transcendent and supersensible – the Holy Grail.
