New music for old instruments: the serpent

Come and be mesmerized by the sinuous forms of one of the most visually distinctive instruments: the 1500th century serpent. The concept of new music for old instruments is not in itself new. Since the expressionist and modernist generations of the early and mid-1900th century, composers have experimented with instruments from older times – from Leoš Janáček with the viola d'amore to Iannis Xenakis with the harpsichord. However, this exploration has rarely involved the tin blow family and especially not the serpent. As part of his research, Jack Adler-McKean, postdoctoral fellow at Malmö University of Music, will tell you everything you didn't know you wanted to know about the serpent, followed by world premieres specially composed for the instrument by composers Jesse Ronneau, Athena Corcoran-Tadd, Henrik Denerin and Orlando Bass.
