Towards precision treatment of depression

Depression is a public illness where current treatment options are often inadequate. Depression includes several different symptoms which in turn can be linked to different nerve circuits in the brain. Not being able to feel joy, or not feeling motivated to do things that were previously pleasurable, is called anhedonia and is a distinctive symptom of certain types of depression. In the brain, there are distinct neural circuits associated with the reward system and when these are disrupted, it can lead to anhedonia. Increased inflammation and decreased activity of the neurotransmitter dopamine play an important role in these neural pathways.
