The monastery church

Martina Björk, church musician in the parish of St. Peter's Monastery, talks about the Monastery Church.

On the site where St. Peter's Monastery Church stands, people have gathered for prayer and worship since the mid-1100th century. For several centuries, life in and around the church was characterized by the monastic life of the Benedictine nuns. In connection with the Reformation, the monastery activities were discontinued, but the church was allowed to remain standing. Of Lund's 27 medieval churches, all were demolished except for the Abbey Church and the Cathedral.

Squick facts about the monastery church

  • The original church was made of sandstone and was founded in the 1100th century.
  • In the 1300th century, the stone church was demolished to make way for the medieval brick church that stands here today.
  • For several hundred years the church was built together with a Benedictine nunnery. This was closed down at the beginning of the 1600th century.
  • The same church bell has been ringing for church services for almost 800 years.
  • The church has also been a parish church throughout the years. Perhaps that is why it was allowed to remain standing when the Danish Reformation came along and 25 of Lund's 27 medieval churches were destroyed.

This event is part of Lund City Strong Streets, an arrangement where we jointly lift the streets around Lilla Fiskaregatan for a week. and Klostergatan.
