The normal flora of the airways at our service? Potential probiotics against respiratory tract infections.
Respiratory tract infection is one of the most common reasons for visits to the doctor and causes close to 2.5 million deaths annually worldwide. As in the gastrointestinal tract, the local bacterial flora in the respiratory tract has been suggested to influence disease as well as health. It has recently been seen that the presence of certain bacteria is associated with a reduced risk of respiratory infections. But how do these "friendly" bacteria regulate disease and health in the respiratory tract? Is it possible to use the normal flora as probiotics to prevent, or perhaps even treat, serious respiratory infections?
