The Saturday Conversation in the City Hall – Everyday Democracy as a Popular Movement

Saturday conversation in the City Hall

10 years ago, Lund received a large number of unaccompanied young refugees. Among the many initiatives that were taken to meet, engage and help these young people was the non-profit association Hållihopp. Through simple initiatives such as homework help, summer job placement, raven football and coffee, lasting relationships were created between established and newly arrived young people. Today, almost everyone is moving on with their own lives and jobs in the municipality of Lund.

Popular movements have played a crucial role in Sweden's democratic development. Everyday citizen engagement is one of the reasons why municipalities' attitudes towards migration differ so markedly from the national narrative. The conversation also touches on the role society can play in integration and how local engagement affects societal development.

During the conversation, we meet some of those who were involved and get to share their experiences about meetings, challenges and ways forward. We also listen to what research and statistics say about what vibrant citizenship means for smaller cities.

The conversation is moderated by Jonas Öste Klevhag. Participants in the conversation are Kajsa Rosenblad (Hållihopp), Maissa Halim (DemoUng), Sahel Ghaznavi (Hållihopp), Mehdi Mohammadi (Hållihopp), Hussein Heydari (Hållihopp) and Jan Mewes (Lund University).

Please come as early as 13:30 PM when coffee and cinnamon rolls will be handed out to the first 50 visitors! The conversation will take place between 14:00 PM and 15:00 PM, at the Amfi venue, Stadshallen, Stortorget 9.

The call is free of charge, no pre-registration is required – welcome!
