————————————————————————————————————————————————— ——–

Beaujolais Nouveau is a tradition that began as early as the 1800th century but really took off after the Second World War. During the 1980s, this young wine achieved global cult status, and queues at Systembolaget could be long as people eagerly waited to taste the almost transparent wine from southern Burgundy.

The story of Beaujolais Nouveau began with the year's harvest from Beaujolais fully fermenting in oak barrels during transport to Lyon. Curiosity about how this year's wine would taste led to the phenomenon seeing the light of day. After World War II, restrictions were eased on winegrowers, and they were given the opportunity to sell more of the young wine, which later became known as Primeurs.

In 1936, the Beaujolais AOC was established, and with this came regulations surrounding the production of wine from the region. Initially, the Primeur wine could only be sold from December 15, but in 1951 this date was changed to November 15, marking the official start of Beaujolais Nouveau.

During the 1950s and 60s, Beaujolais Nouveau became a day of celebration in Paris and many parts of France. The wine also began to be marketed internationally, and the 1970s saw the emergence of competitions, such as the famous Beaujolais Nouveau race from England. During the 1980s, the phenomenon had reached worldwide success, and the launch date was moved to the third Thursday in November. One of the biggest proponents of the wine was Georges Deboeuf, who played a key role in its marketing.

As with all successes came copycats. Other countries and regions began to produce their own versions of the young and fruity wine. In the 2000s the trend for Beaujolais Nouveau declined, but in the 2010s we saw a new generation of wine lovers seeking easy-drinking, elegant wines with low alcohol content, leading to a renaissance for Beaujolais Nouveau. The natural wine movement, which has had a major influence over the past 15 years, has also played an important role in this revival.

Today, every year on the third Thursday of November, wine lovers worldwide gather to celebrate Beaujolais Nouveau. The wine has once again become something to talk about, and we see Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé adorning posters and bottles around the world. We welcome you to join this celebration and experience the joy of the year's first taste of Beaujolais.
