Female instrument pioneers / Thursday Talk

What does it mean for a musician to break new ground as one of the first female practitioners of an instrument that has been strongly male-coded? What obstacles do you encounter? At tonight's Thursday Talk, we get to meet three prominent female musicians who all have in common that they were pioneers on their respective instruments within their tradition. An exciting conversation with, of course, live music!

Maya Yousef, originally from Syria, now stay in the UK, and one of the very few female professional practitioners of Arabic qanoun.

Jyotsna Srikanth, from Bangalore in southern India, one of the world's foremost violinists in the southindiska the Carnatic music tradition, and one of the few women to play the violin professionally in this tradition.

Tina Quartey, percussionist based in Malmö, with his foundation in the Afro-Cuban percussion tradition, but who has been a strong driving force when it comes to introducing percussion as an integral part of Swedish and Nordic folk music. One of the few female percussionists in this tradition.

Also participating as fellow musicians are Pär Moberg and Mats Edén, fiddlers and teachers at the Academy of Music in Malmö.
