QUARTER PAST

Welcome to a moment of relaxation from everyday stress as Odeum invites you to a forty-five minute break in the middle of the day with chamber music by students at the Academy of Music in Malmö.

This time the percussion class offers a colorful program with four classics. In Krzysztof Falkowski's playful Burning Bars samsas no less than four percussionists about a single marimba. Tobias Broström's almost symphonic percussion quartet SHADOW contains great variety in terms of timbre at the same time as tension in both tonality and modality is utilized. Ombra is shadow in Italian and the piece was composed in Italy in December 2009.

Sharpened Stick refers to a traditional war dance of the North American indigenous people, the Iroquois.

The piece is a high-intensity piece with complex but captivating rhythms and time signature changes. The dance limps swinging in a mixture of time signatures 5-7-6-8. The concert ends with White Pines by percussion virtuoso Michael Burritt. The piece contains a mix of rhythmic and melodic elements and revolves around the marimba but lots of other instruments such as vibraphones, glockenspiel, antique cymbals and a range of drums are used. A multifaceted sound world is painted and the piece moves both through virtuoso rhythmic passages but also more dynamic and lyrical ones. The piece refers to the white pines that are common in the North American forests.
