Black holes are completely invisible to our telescopes and they are massive. Black holes have so much gravity that no light, visible, infrared, ultraviolet or X-ray waves, is emitted from them. Therefore, astronomers have to find other ingenious methods to detect black holes.

Only the largest stars end their lives as black holes. These explode as spectacular supernovae when their fuel runs out and a black hole remains. But no star is large enough to form the supermassive black holes that astronomers discover at the centers of many galaxies. These supermassive black holes must have formed in some other way.
