When so-called acts of madness occur – sudden and unprovoked acts of violence in public places – it always arouses great concern and fear. In many of these cases, it turns out that the perpetrator suffers from mental illness. What is the real connection between violent crime and mental illness? Do society's reactions to "acts of madness" reinforce stigmatizing prejudices that mental illness can make people dangerous? How does the criminal law deal with people who, due to severe mental illness or disability, lack the ability to understand or control their actions? Is it possible to prevent acts of madness?
The event is part of the series Criminal Conversations – open conversations about crime and punishment with criminal law researchers Sverker Jönsson and Tova Bennet and is arranged in collaboration with Lund University.
