Experience Shakespeare's Merchant at a new address, where deafness is the norm.
Riksteatern Crea places the action of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice on the island of Martha's Vineyard in the USA, a hundred years in the future. By this time, the digital world has collapsed and an alternative society has emerged on the island. Here, a group of deaf idealists live in a strong community. But it is not long before power games and greed challenge the idyll.
The Merchant on Martha's Vineyard, written by Filip Burman, directed by Debbie Z. Rennie and dramaturgically by Magnus Lindman, is a dramatic comedy of intrigue that sheds new light on the power relations of our time. But it also recalls the true story of Martha's Vineyard, where all the inhabitants, deaf and hearing, spoke sign language for 200 years.
