Ivan Jordell – A colorful black

Vernissage Saturday 19 October at 13-16 in the presence of curator Sune Nordgren.
Art evening Lund Saturday 19 October at 17-22 pm.

Ivan Jordell (1901–1965) came to Skåne in his twenties, trained as an artist and in 1937 became a member of Aura. The first time he exhibited separately at Krognoshuset was in January 1948, and the art critic Marianne Nanne-Bråhammar in the newspaper Arbetet was enthusiastic: "If you had set your expectations high for Ivan Jordell's exhibition at Krognoshuset, they were also completely fulfilled. There were several highlights here, each of which would have been enough to designate the performance as an art event... One is grateful for the exhibition, even if the Museum in Malmö or the Scanian Art Museum in Lund had been the right premises, where Jordell could show a richer selection of his large oil paintings. But nothing should prevent a new exhibition from being planned in the near future. Jordell's position as one of our top painters is fully justified!”

Now Ivan Jordell actually had some major solo exhibitions behind him: already in 1940 at Malmö Museums and in 1946 at Gothenburg's Konsthall. He frequently participated in group exhibitions of various constellations around Scandinavia - not infrequently with titles such as "Scandinavian painter" - especially in Stockholm - and is represented at both the Moderna Museet and the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen.

To shine a light on an artist who died almost sixty years ago and who has fallen completely undeservedly into oblivion, is nevertheless a discovery that must be justified. Actuality does not lie in Ivan Jordell as a representative of any revived art direction or social trend. The motivation lies in the artwork. In their intimacy, they express a humanism and a timelessness that has to do with interpersonal relationships and the absolute values of existence. Straight to the point, no frills. Far from self-assertion or sentimentality. Far from decoration or technical finesse.
They are straightforward, empathetic portraits of real people and nature on its own terms. Ivan Jordell found in the Scanian landscape both painful beauty and a touch of the melancholy that would characterize his artistry. His expressive painting is filled with a colorful blackness.
