BJÖRN ATLDAX
"Most often my works are about commenting on people's shared fantasies around myths and religion.
The world is full of strange stories that affect people's everyday lives. The one thing weirder than that
Other. Using references to the general mindset of symbols and stories that surround us
is exciting because the thought work of the viewer has already started.”
Death and the skull have a place in all our hearts, in most cultures and popular cultures. Everywhere and throughout history. Björn Atldax makes an impact in, and explores different cultural expressions where skulls and death have traditionally had a large place.
From Voodoo and pirate flags to the Day of the Dead, Tibetan Kapalas and your own fantasies. Symbolic and playful.
Hopefully quiet and bizarre.
The works have been drawn with marker and then, in collaboration with Indigofera jeans, transformed into a small limited edition blankets woven from 100% Norwegian wool on Rörås Tweed. Dimensions 150x200cm.
The works have been inspired by a number of different sources, for example Baron Samedi (one of the spirits lwa or loa in the Haitian voodoo religion) Behemoth (Behemoth is a herbivorous mythological animal mentioned in the book of Job in the Old Testament) and the Tarot card Death (the card is generally seen as number 13. Correctly, the card symbolizes change, ending, transition, or letting go. Conversely, the card symbolizes fear of change, repeating negative patterns, stagnation, and decay.)
What the works have in common is that they are motifs that often spread horror, but here the motifs are presented in such a way that the viewer is enchanted by the craftsmanship rather than horrified by what is presented.
In Atldax's world, these inspirations are something depicted in a de-dramatized way; the blood flows, the coffins pile up but the horrors are bewitchingly delightful.
Björn Atldax (Born 1973 in Stockholm) is an artist and illustrator. Atldax is best known as an illustrator who captures contemporary trends, but Atldax works with a range of different art forms, means of expression, techniques and materials, according to his own statement, Atldax works in any material he can get his hands on.
Atldax has previously shown work at Riche; "Tupilaker" which according to Greenlandic Inuit tradition is
vengeful monsters, built from skeletons and other animal parts.
