The late 1800th century hypnosis fever

Welcome to the lecture with free admission from 17.45:XNUMX PM! The Nordenstedt seminar is a lecture series funded by Nordenstedt Foundation.

A lecture on the golden age of hypnosis. Hypnosis began to be used as a medical treatment in the 1880s and doctors eagerly discussed its therapeutic advantages and disadvantages. But hypnotism was also a popular cultural phenomenon; traveling hypnotists attracted large audiences, and in the press and fiction this mysterious power was portrayed as both attractive and frightening. How can we understand the dual nature of hypnosis? And how has it left its mark on our own time?

Cecilia Riving is a researcher at the Department of History at Lund University and education coordinator at the National Graduate School of Historical Studies. She has worked on research projects on the life stories of psychiatric patients, and has experience as a cultural editor, magazine editor, and language reviewer.
