From cell culture in plastic dishes to mini-organs and people on a chip

In medical research and drug development, we have long relied on simple cell culture models in plastic dishes. The first human cells were grown in the middle of the last century and largely the same methods are still used today for many cell types.

From these simpler cell cultures in plastic dishes, we have in the last decade taken a big step forward in medical research and drug development. Through the emergence of organoids, small mini-organs grown in a lab, and organs-on-chips, dynamic cell models that mimic human organs, we have the opportunity to study cells in a completely new way. These ground-breaking advances open up exciting opportunities to better understand diseases, develop new treatments and shape the medicine of the future.

The lecturer is Maria Antfolk, assistant university lecturer at the Department of Biomedical Technology. Organized in collaboration with Lund University and the Crafoord Foundation.
