The large mines in the north are the foundation of our welfare. Now they are expanding like never before. The green fossil-free iron ore is on the way. In Gällivare, with two large mines, unemployment is the lowest in the country.
The community of Malmberget is now completely wiped out. People have been forced to move and make way for the mining industry. The labor shortage is acute. The housing shortage is acute. The municipal treasury is no longer making ends meet.
And how are the people who have lost their homelands feeling? They have to pay a high price for the hunt for rare earth metals, copper and iron ore.
Journalist Tina Thunander moved there to work at the school, meet people who have long learned to keep their hands in their pockets, and discover a society on the ropes. This became the book Ditflyttarna.
