"The world has been so great for so long and I've started longing for something as simple as playing and singing again without a band.
I see before me that I am out in the world and sit down somewhere and listen to a troubadour or poet who sits by himself and plays his music and his lyrics in some small place. I really like that feeling. Life as well.
When I was 25 years old, I toured like that in Germany, it was just me and a small bag, several of those gigs I still remember as very funny. When I'm alone, there's more appeal to the audience and if they're on the notes, it's something different, more human, than the big contexts.
It is the piano that is the basis of everything I do and have done and it is where it all began. Even though life has taken completely different turns, and I've barely practiced in decades, it's still like coming home when I sit down there. That's why it doesn't feel very scary to play alone, vocals and piano are like a duo. So I'm not alone.
