The Dean's House - production of medieval furniture

Welcome to viewing!

In 2024, Kulturen started a project where we portray the Dean's House in our open-air museum as a priest's residence. The dean's house was built in different stages from the 1200th-1300th century until the 1500th century. At least one dean lived in the house around 1530. It was Torben Bille who in 1532 became archbishop. The dean was the provost's closest man in the cathedral. To depict a residence for a priest as it might have looked in the early 1500th century, we have studied medieval images and preserved furniture. We partly use purchased oak wood but also pine that we cut on Kulturens mark on the farm Östarp. To manufacture the furniture, we use various tools that existed in the Middle Ages, such as saws, planes, scrapers, chisels, chisels, lathes, calipers and drills.

Superintendent Gunilla Gardelin talks about the project, and carpenter Olof Andersson shows and talks about how he goes about constructing the furniture we have chosen for the Dean's House.

Collection in the Garden Room (entrance house), the room behind the museum shop.

We are still fundraising for the project. Do you want to make a contribution? Read more here.
