Tradwives – traditional wives – have become an online trend, driven by influencers who claim to live by traditional gender norms and who document their housewife lives on social media. Critics of the trend are concerned about the connection between tradwives and far-right political movements, arguing that the lifestyle is part of a backlash against various gender equality movements.
Rachel Irwin and Talieh Mirsalehi, associate professor and researcher in ethnology respectively, talk about how they investigate the experience of becoming and being a tradwife. What motivates the women, how do they view traditional gender roles and how do they describe their everyday lives? The researchers also show how global trends circulate and are adapted to local contexts, in this case Sweden and Finland.
The lecture is introduced by Johannes Persson, Dean of the Faculties of Humanities and Theology. Organized in collaboration with Lund University and the Crafoord Foundation. Free admission, no pre-registration required.
