Why are so many teenage girls tired? Is it just a sign of the times, or can there sometimes be medical explanations?
In a study conducted in 2023 among almost 500 female high school students at Spyken in Lund and Malmö Latinskola, it was found that 38 percent had iron deficiency. Iron is an important substance in the body that is needed both for the blood's oxygen transport and for many processes in the body and brain. At the same time, the symptoms can be diffuse, which means that iron deficiency is sometimes missed.
Moa Wolff, physician and associate professor of general and community medicine, talks about what we know so far about iron deficiency in young women, what questions still remain unanswered, and how the new research program IRONGIRLS in Lund will try to find out more. Why is iron deficiency so common? And how can we become better at detecting it in time?
The lecture is introduced by Patrik Midlöv, Head of the Department of Clinical Sciences, Malmö. Organized in collaboration with Lund University and the Crafoord Foundation. Free admission, no pre-registration required.
