Crafoord's Science Lunches: Into the Core of Limestone

The bedrock in Skåne and Denmark is largely composed of limestone. It is therefore important to know the properties of limestone bedrock, for example to secure access to drinking water in underground aquifers, when building tunnels – such as the Öresund Tunnel and the Copenhagen Metro – or when limestone is to be extracted as a raw material.

However, limestones are complex rocks made up of the remains of ancient marine organisms. Their microscopic structures and physical properties therefore vary greatly, requiring careful investigation to facilitate more effective assessments of the rock in the future.

Sara Johansson, assistant professor of technical geology, talks about investigations of limestone with advanced X-ray tomography – a technique that makes it possible to create three-dimensional images of the internal structure of the stone. By linking these detailed images to electrical and acoustic measurement methods, it is possible to create conditions for using new methods to better interpret what is hidden beneath the ground surface.

The lecture is introduced by Margaret McNamee, Vice-Chancellor at LTH. Organized in collaboration with Lund University and the Crafoord Foundation. Free admission, no pre-registration required.
