Welcome to Brown Bag Lunches, the conversation series where we delve into what is the core of the museum - the creative process! Together with exciting and inspiring guests from different backgrounds, we curiously try to understand what their creative processes look like. And in the meantime we enjoy a good lunch from restaurant På Skissernas.
Today's guest is artist Fredrik Strid, whose exhibition Making Nature is at the museum until September 22. The exhibition presents the process-based sculpture project Alla fåglar i Sverige. A work that the artist has been working on since 2018. The extensive installation consists of all of Sweden's bird species modeled to scale in clay and then cast into candles in white candle wax. The exhibition also shows the sculpture Eko, which corresponds to All Birds in Sweden and raises questions related to museums' collecting, classification and historiography. Through sculpture and installation, he explores his relationship to nature romance, nature in museums, natural science and history, and his experiences of actual nature. In his work, a subtly growing tension is often created between the obvious and the hidden.
Fredrik Strid (b. 1973) is educated at the Academy of Arts in Malmö and UCLA in California. He has been a studio scholar at IASPIS in Stockholm and taught sculpture at Konstfack in Stockholm. Strid lived and worked in the USA for many years. Today he has his artistic activity in Persbo Studio in Uppland, where he also runs the sculpture park Persbo Studio Skulpturpark. Strid is represented in several collections, including the Eskilstuna Art Museum, Malmö Art Museum, Uppsala Art Museum, the State Art Council and Region Skåne.
The conversation is led by author Paola Pellettieri.
