Pictures as notes – what does a graphic score sound like?

Graphic notation is what it is called when the composer chooses to use images or other visual symbols and elements of a not necessarily "musical" nature to notate a composition instead of traditional notes. The form of music, where the musicians thus immediately play to an image, often with an improvisatory approach, became popular within the avant-garde of the 1950s and 60s, and has been an important part of contemporary art music ever since. Lund Contemporary has invited perhaps Sweden's foremost expert on graphic notation, the composer, musician and sound artist Leif Jordanceson, to tell, together with musicians from The Great Learning Orchestra, how a performer can approach and relate to this music. We get to hear several examples of typical graphic works from the late history of music at the same time as the respective score - or image - is projected on a large screen for the audience.
