Basia Bulat is a Canadian singer-songwriter with a voice that immediately captures the listener. With influences from both gospel, soul and classic folk, she creates music filled with emotion and presence. In addition to her impressive singing ability, she is a skilled multi-instrumentalist and masters everything from electric guitar and piano to autoharpa, ukulele, bass and charango.
She is currently working on “Basia's Palace”, an album that will be released on February 21, 2025. The album was mixed by Tucker Martine (known for his work with Beth Orton, Neko Case and The National) and features string arrangements by Grammy-nominated Drew Jurecka (Dua Lipa, Metric, Alvvays).
The idea for “Basia's Palace” was born in 2022, a time of change and reflection. New home, new family, a break from touring life – for the first time in a long time, Basia was able to truly listen inward. She spent late nights writing songs in her Hayao Miyazaki notebook, playing classic Nintendo games like Dragon Warrior 4, and experimenting with new soundscapes on her MacBook. These creative night hours resulted in her most dreamy and introspective album to date – a magical journey through time and space, where her music hovers between the past and the future, like a soundtrack to Chrono Trigger.
But “Basia's Palace” is more than a place – it's a feeling. It's the moment when a song is born, when a melody leaves the heart and takes its place on the stage, in the headphones, in the listener's soul.
Acclaimed worldwide, Basia Bulat has performed with symphony orchestras and at major tribute concerts for legends such as Leonard Cohen, Daniel Lanois, Nick Cave and The Band. She has shared the stage with greats such as St Vincent, Sufjan Stevens, The National, Michael Kiwanuka, Beirut and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Her performances have been featured on NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts, Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Later with Jools Holland, and she has received praise in The New York Times and The Needle Drop, among others.
With three Polaris Music Prize nominations and five JUNO Awards nominations under her belt, Basia Bulat continues to enchant her audiences – and “Basia's Palace” is her most captivating work to date.
