Aslan Goisum. Prism

Aslan Goisum. Prism

Lund Art Gallery 10 February – 12 May 2024

Prism is a solo exhibition by the Berlin-based artist Aslan Goisum, born in Grozny, Chechnya, in 1991 and educated in Moscow, Ghent and Amsterdam. He has exhibited extensively both in and outside of Europe for a dozen years, but this is his first major exhibition in Sweden. We are pleased to be able to show this penetrating artistry at this particular time, in this particular state of the world.

The exhibition includes ten works, and four of them have been conceived and produced especially for the occasion. Prism (2024), the newest work that also lends its title to the whole exhibition, consists of three LED screens, seven meters high, with video footage of a young male actor's body.

The sculpture installations Star, Table and Wheel (all 2024) use other basic geometric shapes—the cylinder, the rectangle, the five-pointed star—to articulate Goisum's observations of how the visual codes of empire still shape everyday life in what might now be called northern Eurasia.

Spear (2023–24) is an installation with books wrapped in pale pink paper and subjected to highly precise scalpel cuts. Object (2022) consists of seven fence-like sculptures in black powder-coated steel. Goisum's visit to a cemetery outside Almaty in Kazakhstan served as the conceptual and visual trigger for the work.

The other existing works included in the exhibition are the video works touch(2023) as well Scythian Journey (2019) and two wall-based installations with recycled house numbers and street signs from Grozny: Numbers (2015) as well Fearsome (2011–).
