AI and the world of moths

Lars Pettersson, associate professor of zooecology at the Department of Biology, presents his research in which he explores the fascinating world of moths with the help of AI.

Just a few years ago, moths were a group of animals that most people only encountered in passing, perhaps one came in at night when the window was open, perhaps some fluttered past on the side of the road in the glare of car lights, perhaps one buzzed around like a hummingbird in front of the honeysuckle in the garden. Even for scientists and nature enthusiasts, they were difficult to study, for anyone except experts with long experience. It has been a shame, because moths are important in many ways: they are food for birds and bats, the larvae gnaw on plants, and not least, moths are important pollinators!

Today, developments in AI-supported image interpretation and mobile apps have made it easy to start looking at moths. With an app as a guide, it is now possible to start exploring this fascinating world. Lars Pettersson, associate professor of zooecology at the Department of Biology, Lund University, talks about how to learn about our moths with modern technology.
