AI and democratic governance

How does artificial intelligence affect the possibility of achieving the global goal of peaceful and inclusive societies? Maria Hedlund, Department of Political Science, presents how the use of AI can pose problems for democracy, but also discusses whether AI could be beneficial for democratic governance.

The global sustainability goal of peaceful and just societies requires inclusive institutions with functioning accountability, but artificial intelligence (AI) including generative AI challenges democratic governance in several ways. Accountability is made more difficult if decision-making is effectively left to algorithms. The ability to exercise democratic influence is curtailed if public activities become dependent on the priorities of private AI companies. And democratic discourse is limited if AI-generated content makes it difficult to determine what is true or false.

Based on these and other examples, this presentation points out how the use of AI can pose problems for democracy, but also discusses how AI could be beneficial for democratic governance.
